McCarthy hearings
joseph McCarthy was a united states senator representing the states of Wisconsin. The Senator who started the scare that Communists had infiltrated the government. He claimed to have a list of all those involved with Communism in the government (which was something that he actually didn't know). This fomented the red scare even more and caused quite the uproar for a year or two, before he overplayed his hand and was slowly being ignored.
The missile race was simply a race between the U.S. and Soviet Union to build more and better bombs than each other. The reason why it happened was because during this time, The U.S. and the Soviets were bitter rivals. Each side accused each other over things they didn't do. The U.S. were extremely paranoid of Soviet spies for fearing that they may give information to the Soviets so McCarthy was one of those paranoid people who feared that ANYBODY could be a spy. That's why he accused many people of being a communist. Some of the McCarthy trial hearings were held in New York City at the Federal Courthouse. Most of the trial took place in Washington, DC. in the 1530's. Yes it would be different with a different leader because there would be less confusion. The result was that fears of subversion can lead to the erosion of constitutional liberties.
